Finding Your Voice: The 5th, Vishuddha Chakra and Bhramari Breath

The chakras are subtle energy centers that can be used as tools for self-awareness, helping us explore who we are on a deeper level and connect more fully with our truth and authenticity. We can use them as a meaning-making system and a way to befriend ourselves. And, as with all inner work, I think it’s important to come from self-love rather than we need to fix or change ourselves.

The fifth chakra, or Vishuddha Chakra, is located at the throat and is often associated with communication, truth, and creativity. It's all about your voice and the ways you express yourself in the world. That can mean speaking, singing, sighing, laughing. It includes setting boundaries, saying yes when you mean yes, and saying no when you mean no. Being able to communicate what you want, what you need, and what you believe with honesty and confidence.

When this energy feels balanced, we may feel more comfortable speaking clearly, listening deeply, and expressing ourselves authentically. When it feels out of balance, it can show up as holding back, fear of speaking up, second-guessing ourselves, or over-explaining because we’re looking for reassurance on what we say being okay.

I love the connection between the throat and the jaw. Think about what happens when you’re trying not to say something. You might clench your jaw, bite your tongue, or hold tension in your face. We can physically hold back the words we want to express. Relaxing the jaw and softening the throat can therefore be a simple reminder that we don’t always have to hold everything in.

The practice of finding your voice doesn’t have to mean becoming louder. Sometimes authentic expression is soft. Sometimes it's saying something that feels scary or uncomfortable. Admitting what you want, setting a boundary. And sometimes, simply singing in the shower or car because it feels good to make noise and take space!

The goal isn’t to perform or to become someone you aren't. It’s to become more comfortable expressing who you already are. To reduce the fear, anxiety, and second-guessing that can keep us from speaking our truth. To build courage and confidence.

Tools for the 5th Chakra - Bhramari Pranayama

One of the ways we can connect with the fifth chakra is through Bhramari Pranayama, also known as Bee’s Breath. Bhramari is a calming breathing practice that uses a gentle humming sound on the exhale. The vibration of the hum brings awareness to the throat and creates a beautiful opportunity to connect with your own voice and inner experience.

To practice Bhramari, sit comfortably with a long spine. You can gently cover your eyes with your fingers and use your thumbs to cover your ears, turning your attention away from the outside world and inward toward yourself. Inhale slowly through your nose, and then exhale with your lips closed while making a steady humming sound, like a bee. Continue for five or six rounds.

As you hum, you may notice the vibration in your throat, jaw, face, chest, or even throughout your body. You may feel it in your hands as they rest over your eyes or ears. You may notice the vibration moving through your entire body. Simply pay attention to what you experience, the vibration in your body and how your throat and jaw feel. Notice how it feels to make sound.

Tools for the 5th Chakra - Journaling and Affirmations

You might also spend some time reflecting and journaling on a few questions. Writing is another way we can express ourself.

  • Where am I holding back?

  • Where am I over-explaining?

  • Where do I want to be more truthful?

  • Where am I afraid to use my voice?

Affirmations are another helpful way to experience your own voice and speak intentions out into the world. The ones here are connected to your fifth chakra.

  • I hear and speak the truth.

  • Creativity flows through me.

  • I express myself with clear intent.

  • My voice is necessary.

The Vishuddha Chakra offers us an invitation and reminder to communicate what is true for you. To take up space and show up in the world with honesty, confidence, and self-love.
